A Clockwork Orange Hidden Messages: The Injection

In the film, A Clockwork Orange directed by Stanley Kubrick, the main character Alex after committing heinous crimes one involving rape is sent to prison. After so many years in prison, he is offered a chance to be released early if he agrees to participate in an experimental pharmaceutical treatment.

He is injected with a mysterious drug and then strapped to a chair with his eyelids forced open to watch violent videos and images. After he has completed the treatment, he finds himself physically ill and an odd paralyzing fear to do nothing overcomes him when he tries to indulge these old habits. He can no longer enjoy sexual contact, the enjoyment of violent images, or music.

What is interesting, is these effects Alex experiences in the film, closely resemble the side effects of injecting vaccines into young children and babies. Was the author Anthony Burgess trying to tell us something more, maybe symbolically expressing our leader’s interest in the drugging of the young with vaccines and other pharmaceutical drugs? Is he pointing out the side effects caused by similar chemical cocktails we inject into the population today?

After all, Bertrand Russel did in fact state in the 1950s,

“Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible. Even if all are miserable, all will believe themselves happy, because the government will tell them that they are so.”

The dreadful feeling Alex feels could be compared to the same feeling a person with social anxiety experiences. Or in the more extreme case autism. A person with these conditions might describe it like this,

“I felt I was on stage for every word I spoke, a constant spectator and micromanager of every micro-action I took in my life when it came to interacting with others. Wanting to hug or experience any physical contact with another, felt almost impossible like my body was paralyzed from expressing it. The paralyzing feeling would be followed by an upset stomach. It felt like I was riding a rollercoaster of emotions up and downhills. To escape this body prison the thought of jumping out a window felt oddly comforting, much like the main character in Orange Clockwork.”

Is the government in fact using these drugs to control our social behaviors and our ability to reproduce?
